中國長城

此本《The great wall of China》(中國長城)是20世紀初美國著名旅行家William Edgar Geil的著作。其內容為20世紀初西方人對中國長城全線的全球第一次徒步考察記錄,內含照片一百多幅,向人們真實地展示了100年前中國長城的原始風貌。此英文本出版於1909年。

這是20世紀初葉,由西方人所做的全球第一次徒步考察中國長城全線的真實記錄,是一群由西方專業人士精心製作的關於中國長城歷史文化的視覺盛宴。從東部的渤海之濱到西北的戈壁沙漠,從山海關到青藏高原,美國地理學家蓋洛率領的考察隊利用鏡頭和文字,細緻入微地記錄了有關長城的傳說和沿線的風土人情,向人們真實地展示了100年前中國長城的原始風貌。書中呈現的如今已蕩然無存的長城烽火台,關隘遺蹟以及許多鮮為人知的有關長城遺址的攝影或繪畫作品,具有極高的考古價值和史料價值。本書為我們重新審視中國長城乃至中國歷史提供了新的史料和視角。

William Edgar Geil(威廉·埃德加·蓋洛)20世紀初美國著名旅行家、英國皇家地理學會會員。1865年出生於美國賓夕法尼亞州的多伊爾斯頓城。蓋洛受過嚴格系統的地理學專業訓練,對中國的歷史文化抱有深厚的興趣。1903年首次來到中國,從上海乘船逆流而上,沿途考察了長江流域的人文地理,寫下了《揚子江上的美國人》(1904)一書,受到西方讀者的歡迎。此後,他又數次來到中國考察,走遍了大江南北、長城內外、三山五嶽,連續出版了《中國長城》(1909)、《中國十八省府》(1911)和《中國五嶽》(1926)等一系列著作。(介紹參考:中國長城
